Abstract
Hancock (2014) reviewed recent legislative action in the states as well as court cases in which students have filed lawsuits against their educational institutions because of their educational requirements in regard to counseling with sexual minorities, especially gay and lesbian individuals. This article looks at the issue of who should control the training of new mental health professionals, that is, psychologists, professional counselors, social workers, and marriage and family therapists, and analyzes the critical professional/ethical and legal issues, along with a look at the rights and responsibilities of a student versus a professional. It specifically addresses the issue of why the American Counseling Association, in particular, has become a target for such actions. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
