Abstract

Two decades of literature concerning the treatment of self injurious biting is reviewed. Of articles published during that period, 43, representing the treatment of 63 individuals, met our minimal inclusion criteria. Each of those articles is evaluated and the specific treatments described in detail. Designed to allow clinicians to make informed treatment decisions, these descriptions provide information necessary to implement the selected treatmen option. Results of this review suggest that a differential reinforcement procedure, coupled with social timeout or brief informational restraint, can provide an effective intervention for eliminating self-biting.
