Abstract
Substance misuse is a common contributing factor in illness and injury. Harmful or hazardous misuse – not the same as dependence/addiction - represents 20% of the patient population and is recognized as an essential target for intervention to help prevent more serious use of alcohol and other drugs. Traditionally, general health care has not systematically addressed substance use issues. However, healthcare visits offer teachable moments when providers can help patients make healthier choices. Partnering in these teachable moments with patients who may be receptive to the idea of making positive behavior change for better health is crucial for effectively addressing risky substance use.
