Base-induced cyclization of the vinyl phosphonates yields phosphonomethyl-substituted tetrahydrofurans. Inversion of the hydroxyl stereochemistry by Mitsunobu reaction and then cyclization yields a different set of phosphonomethyl-substituted tetrahydrofuran diastereoisomers.",
