Abstract

MU-ADEPT trains healthcare providers in Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) to address alcohol misuse and abuse. Using motivational interviewing, the goal is to increase patients’ intrinsic motivation toward healthy behavior change.
Patient understanding of risky drinking – standard drink sizes, along with daily & weekly drink limits – is key.
We wondered what patients know about their own drinking patterns and risks, and how providers might enhance patient knowledge, key in efforts toward healthy and lasting behavioral change.
