Professor Uma A. Segal's current areas of research interest and publication are immigrant and refugee concerns in global perspective. From 2007 to 2015, she served as a resident scholar on migration on the Advisory Board of the Katherine A. Kendall Institute (KAKI), an international arm of the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), and she was an elected member of CSWE's Board of Directors (2012 to 2015).
Dr. Segal received and completed a Fulbright Fellowship (2013 to 2014) to develop a new school of social work in India with specializations in global and rural social work. In 2013, she received CSWE's Promotion of International Education (PIE) award for her commitment to international social work education. Professor Segal is an external collaborator at the Universidade do Fernando do Pessoa, CENMIN (Center for Minority Studies) in Porto, Portugal, and she is a visiting professor at the University of Tsukuba’s Graduate School of Comprehensive Human Sciences in Tsukuba, Japan.
In addition to teaching in social work, she has taught courses in human resource management and business administration at Alliance University (Bangalore, India), the National Economics University (Hanoi, Vietnam), Universidade do Minho (Braga, Portugal), Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (Edwardsville, IL), and Lindenwood University (St. Charles, MO). Uma Segal has participated in research projects on cross-national comparisons of migration in Athens (Greece), Sofia (Bulgaria), and Tokyo (Japan), and she has been an invited speaker in several Asian and European countries. In addition, her research has also taken her to Brazil, India, Russia, and the United Kingdom. She was editor-in-chief of the Journal of Immigrant & Refugee Studies from 2004 to 2012 and redirected its mission toward an international, interdisciplinary focus in exploring all aspects of human migration.
