Xu received a BS in chemical engineering from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China, as well as an MS in organic chemistry and a PhD in materials science and engineering at University of Tsukuba in Japan. She has held postdoctoral positions at Purdue University and at the Beckman Institute at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
